What Happens to Donated Samples at Seattle Sperm Bank

Donations collected at Seattle Sperm Bank play a crucial role in supporting fertility treatments worldwide. In this article, we’ll take you through the process of how samples are collected, processed, frozen, stored, and eventually shipped.

Donating

Donors can visit the lab up to three times per week for six months or more. Once a sample is collected in a sterile cup, our lab team performs a comprehensive semen analysis. This analysis ensures that the sample contains an adequate number of sperm cells for potential fertility treatments. If the sperm count is sufficient, the sample is promptly frozen. However, more often than not, samples undergo further processing, known as a wash.

Washing

Before freezing, most samples undergo a washing process. A wash liquid is introduced to the semen sample, and it is then subjected to a centrifuge. The spinning action separates sperm cells from any other cells or debris present, resulting in samples that contain motile sperm cells in a supportive media for the freezing process.

Freezing

To maintain the viability of sperm cells, frozen storage is imperative. The FDA mandates a 180-day quarantine period for donated samples while the donor undergoes testing for infectious diseases. After six months of consistently negative testing, the samples are cleared for treatment. Frozen samples are stored in liquid nitrogen at an astonishing -196°C (-321°F) until they are ready for use. Properly frozen and stored samples can remain viable indefinitely.

Transporting

Stored in long-term storage until needed, samples are transferred to a specialized shipping tank when the time comes. These tanks are designed to keep the samples frozen for 7 to 14 days, depending on their size. This window provides enough time for the samples to reach the intended treatment location. At the fertility clinic or doctor’s office, a dedicated lab team will thaw the sample, recheck sperm counts, and proceed with the planned treatment.

Making a Difference

Donors in the program make a significant impact on the lives of those awaiting fertility treatment options. This includes men dealing with infertility, LGBTQ couples, and single moms by choice.

If you reside in the Seattle area and are interested in becoming a part of our sperm donor program, you can initiate your application online. Upon completion, you are invited to visit the lab during open hours for semen analysis—the initial step in joining the program.

By understanding the journey of sperm donations, we appreciate the immense contribution made by donors in helping others achieve their dream of starting a family.
